    A project-based doctoral student position

    This interdisciplinary research project aims to develop an optimal core/shell nanovector for controlled drug delivery. The proposed nanovector combines the advantages of both polymer nanoparticles, such as biodegradability, high plasma dispersibility, controlled drug release and ease of surface functionalization, and those of drug nanocrystals, including the ultrahigh drug loading degree and enhanced dissolution rate. A solvent free microfluidic platform is proposed to implement the encapsulation of drug nanoparticles to prepare the core/shell nanovectors. The surface of the obtained nanovector is further functionalized toward the therapy of injured spinal cord.

    Required background: M.Sc. degree in appropriate field of science (e.g. pharmacy, materials, medicine, and chemistry). The experience on the bottom-up synthesis of drug nanoparticles, controlled drug delivery, microfluidics, and biomaterials is preferred.

    We offer a training program in the field of pharmaceutical technology at Faculty of Pharmacy, the University of Helsinki in Finland. The aim of this project is to build a drug nanocrystal-based "super" nanoparticle for controlled drug delivery. Research activity involves microfluidics, physicochemical aspects of the materials and formulations, and biological features of drug delivery systems in the cells and tissues. Our research group and collaborators have particularly strong expertise in biomaterials, microfluidics, nanomedicine, controlled drug delivery, biology, as well as the therapy of injured spinal cord. You will be enrolled in University of Helsinki doctoral program in drug research and will defend your PhD at the end of the project. The PhD research in Helsinki will be conducted in English.

    English language requirement:

    • IELTS ACADEMIC: Minimum requirement is 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in the writing section;
    • TOEFL IBT (Internet-based) 92, a minimum score of 22 in the writing section.

    What we offer:

    • Duration of the contract is 3 years and the appointment starts with a probationary period of four months;
    • The University of Helsinki offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience. The salary will be based on levels 2-4 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. At the beginning of the employment period a doctoral student's salary will range from €2100 to €2400 gross per month;
    • All standard pension benefits and occupational health care are provided for university employees.
